Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert, When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor…and Yourself (Chicago: Moody, 2009), 230 pp.
This book is an excellent resource on how to best serve the poor in missions. Fikkert and Corbett provide a good basic introduction to the biblical concept of the kingdom of God and how that informs the mission of the church. They also offer a definition of poverty that focuses on broken relationships, and warn missions practitioners of serving the poor in ways that ultimately may be harmful rather than helpful. The book is easy to read, practical, and filled with wisdom for pastors, missionaries, and short-term team members who plan on engaging the poor through missions work. From our perspective, this is the very best resource available on this issue.
